Identifikasi Mineral Secara Megaskopis #2

Dalam pengecekan sebelumnya, ada beberapa hal lain yang juga dapat kita analisis dalam identifikasi mineral secara megaskopis. Pemahaman ini akan membantu kita untuk semakin mengenal mineral yang kita tidak tahu sebelumnya. 

Kekerasan

Kekerasan merupakan salah satu sifat properties yang diuji dengan cara menggoreskan permukaan mineral dengan alat uji tertentu. Kekerasan bukan merupakan sifat mineral yang unik, melainkan dapat dimiliki bersama dengan mineral lain. Kekerasan adalah tolok ukur terhadap kekuatan struktur mineral relatif terhadap kekuatan ikatan kimianya. Akan tetapi, kekerasan tidak sama dengan kegetasan yang hanya dipengaruhi oleh struktur mineral saja. Mineral terkeras cenderung untuk memiliki ikatan kovalen kuat. Mineral yang lembut memiliki ikatan van der Waals dan ikatan logam. 

Earth Review

Dalam pengujiannya, kekerasan dinyatakan dengan skala Mohs. Prinsip yang digunakan sama, yaitu mineral yang lebih keras dapat menggores mineral yang  lebih lembut. Skala mohs terdiri dari talk, gypsum, kalsit, fluorit, apatit, ortoklas, kuarsa, topaz, korundum dan intan. Dari talk hingga ke intan, tingkat kekerasan semakin bertambah. Alat uji skala Mohs telah tersedia dalam satu kesatuan untuk mempermudah dalam pengujian. Akan tetapi, jika tidak dimiliki alat tersebut, dapat menggunakan material lain yang umum dengan kekerasan yang telah diketahui, seperti goresan kuku (2.5) dan paku baja (5.5). Dengan demikian, hasil yang diperoleh adalah tingkat kekerasan relatif terhadap kekerasan benda tersebut.

Sistem Kristal

Mineral terbentuk dari kristal yang berbeda. Bentuk kristal memberikan pengaruh penting dalam indentifikasi mineral. Bentuk kristal dipengaruhi oleh struktur kristal mineral dan pengaturan komponen atom atau ionnya. Mineral akan membentuk kristal yang konsisten dengan kelas simetrinya masing – masing sesuai struktur yang dimiliki. sistem kristal terbagi menjadi 7 sistem utama. Sistemnya terdiri atas isometric, tetragonal, hexagonal, trigonal, ortorombik, monoklin, triklin, amorf.

Specific Gravity

Specific gravity berkaitan dengan massa mineral terhadap massa sejumlah air atau dapat dikatakan sebagai densitas material. Specific gravity merupakan tidak terukur karena densitas mineral dibagi dengan densitas air sehingga semua unit hilang. SG merupakan hasil perbandingan terhadap air. Jika sebuah mineral memiliki SG 2, berarti densitas mineral tersebut adalah 2 kali densitas air. Percobaan sederahan dapat dilakukan untuk mengukur nilai SG dari mineral. Ukur massa dari mineral menggunakan neraca. Lalu siapkan 1 gelas ukur (ukuran disesuaikan besarnya mineral) dan isi dengan air hingga level tertentu, misalnya 500 mL. Masukkan mineral dan catat level kenaikan akhir air. Rumus sederhananya:

Specific gravity (SG) = massa mineral : berat dari air yang dipindahkan saat pengukuran

Magnetisme

Magnetisme dapat dikatakan tidak terlalu relevan terhadap identifikasi minera, tetapi cukup membantu dalam membuat identifikasi. Sifat kemagnetan yang unik inilah dimanfaatkan untuk mengidentifikasi mineral tersebut.

Reaksi terhadap asam

Reaksi terhadap asam sangat membantu dalam mengidentifikasi beberapa mineral karbonat dan zeolit. Asam klorida (HCl) yang digunakan akan bereaksi dengan karbonat dan menghasilkan gelembung dan karbon dioksida dalam waktu singkat. Pada mineral zeolit, reaksi tidak langsung terjadi karena adanya komponen silika sehingga membutuhkan jeda 5 – 10 menit.

Tambang intan bawah laut!

Dalam postingan sebelumnya sudah digambarkan bagaimana sebaran eksplorasi bawah laut yang sedang dilakukan oleh beberapa negara. Target eksplorasi bawah laut sendiri tidak lain adalah mineral berharga seperti Au, Ag, Pt, Cu, Mn, dan lainnya. Permintaan yang semakin tinggi dari pasar, harga yang meningkat, perkembangan teknologi yang pesat dan faktor lainnya mendorong pengembangan tambang dilakukan ke area di bawah laut. Beberapa dari kita pernah mendengar Seafloor Massive Sulfide atau Black Smoker yang diduga akan berpotensi untuk jadi target penambangan selanjutnya untuk Cu dan Au setidaknya. Secara geologi keberadaan deposit di bawah laut memang menarik untuk dipelajari dan diketahui. Namun saat ini, secara ekonomis, masih terus dikembangkan untuk potensi penambangan atau mudahnya mengubah sumberdaya ini menjadi sebuah cadangan yang menguntungkan. 

Jadi, apakah operasi penambangan bawah laut sudah dilakukan? 

Jawabannya SUDAH!!!
Perkenalkan Peace in Africa. Ini adalah kapal penambangan Intan di dasar laut yang dilakukan di lepas pantai Afrika Selatan. Penambangan sudah berlangsung kurang lebih sejak 2007. Penambangan intan dilakukan pada sedimen bawah laut yang membawa intan dari deposit primernya. Apakah ekonomis? Jawabannya adalah Iya! Terbukti hingga sekarang tambang ini masih berjalan dan ada sekitar 3 kapal yang terus beroperasi 24 jam sehari dan 7 hari seminggu non-stop. Berikut video perkenalan tentang peace in africa. Hingga saat ini, kapal ini menjadi kapal penambangan terbesar yang pernah ada untuk penambangan bawah laut yang aktif berproduksi. 

Peak oil?

Pernah mendengar istilah peak oil? Ketika kita membicarakan masalah energi itu sendiri, pernahkah mendengar istilah yang menjadi tantangan ke depannya umat manusia. Pernah kah kita memikirkan tentang life time  untuk cheap energy di saat kebutuhan energi terus meningkat? Kita tidak hanya dihadapkan dengan permasalahan akibat penggunaan energi itu sendiri tetapi kita juga harus menghadapi berapa banyak penggunaan yang akan kita butuhkan ke depannya. Peak oil memiliki pengertian bahwa pencapaian produksi minyak bumi pada titik tertentu dan selanjutnya mengalami penurunan hingga resevoar tidak memproduksi kembali. 

Mengapa kita perlu tahu ini? Energi merupakan kebutuhan penting untuk kemajuan suatu negara. Setiap manusia membutuhkan energi untuk menggerakan perekonomian negaranya. Peningkatan pertumbuhan suatu negara, juga menunjukkan peningkatan kebutuhan sumber daya alamnya untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pembangunan negaranya. Sebagai contoh adalah Cina.

Social conflicts and political upheavals, environmental catastrophes and natural disasters, human rights violations and terrorism all show that our era of globalization is far from being one solely of prosperity or wealth.

Young people are most at risk, but also the most active in their communities. International Youth Forum Seliger 2013 can help unite active young people from all over the world, regardless of their social status, ethnic background, political views and religion.

The main goal of the Forum is to build an international community of young people based on the principles of peaceful coexistence, the promotion of personal and democratic liberties and recognition of cultural diversity.

To achieve this goal the organizers have set a number of objectives, including:

• empower global youth, by giving them a greater say in the globalizing world

• encourage young people to find solutions to global challenges: poverty, social conflict, environmental degradation

• foster cooperation among young people in social, political and economic life

• give participants real opportunities to put their leadership skills into practice

• help and support young people in team building and fundraising

• examine the main trends and tendencies in global business, science, culture, mass media, NGO communities

• offer young people the chance to meet and interact with highly qualified specialists ready to support them in turning their project ideas into reality

• help them embrace diversity in delivering practical projects

We believe in fostering an active social position among young people worldwide. Putting these objectives into practice will help strengthen social consciousness among young people internationally and also attain the Forum’s main goal.

Who we need: 1,000 young leaders from different backgrounds, students/graduates from universities worldwide, and young professionals who are highly motivated to effect global change (NOTE: age restrictions apply: 18 – 30 years). Experience in social program implementation or politics is required (e.g. managing or founding not-for-profit organizations, being involved in social projects, or student union/local authority experience). We welcome young talented and creative individuals full of new ideas who are ready to work collaboratively for collective, international, benefit.

Student Energy is excited to announce a new initiative that will bring the innovative format of the International Student Energy Summit to even more of the world’s students and future energy leaders.

Regional Student Energy Summits will occur June 12-13, 2014 simultaneously on 6 continents. The events will each target 100-300 multi-disciplinary post-secondary students from the region.

These unique events will address regional issues while simultaneously giving delegates a deep understanding of the role their region plays in global energy systems and dynamics.

THE BID

Hosting a regional summit is a unique opportunity to highlight your country, city and school to some of the brightest young minds in energy. Institutions from the following 6 regions are invited to apply to host their region’s event:

Academic institutions that want to host an event must fully read the bid overview document below and submit a completed template form by April 1, 2013. Berlin and Munich are the hubs of Entrepreneurship in Germany – but in Munich the cooperation of the 4 Universities gives the Entrepreneurship Scene a uniqueness in fostering Students to build their own Startups. The two renowned „Universities of Excellence“ – the LMU Munich and TU Munich collaborate together with the University of Applied Sciences and the UniBw in this unique project to foster entrepreneurial thinking among students.

The continuous effort of the four established and successful Entrepreneurship Centers has made them the leading Entrepreneurship Centers in Germany. The joint effort for the Global Entrepreneurship Summer School therefore will continuously foster Entrepreneurship in Germany and around the Globe.

Who can apply?

You have to be enrolled in any university at any time during 2013 and you have to be between 18 – 27 years old. Example: If you are enrolled only until February 2013 you can apply even if you won’t be enrolled in September 2013.”Enrolled” applies in our definition also to MBA or PhD students.

Application process

This year we will accept 35 outstanding students from around the world who will get an invitation to Munich. In addition we will accept 15 virtual participants. All applications will go through a very strict, but fair selection process. The deadline for Early Bird applications will be April 30, 2013. The regular deadline will be May 31, 2013 (GMT -12). We will inform everybody at the latest during the last week of June about their application status.

Accommodation

Participants won’t have to pay for their accommodation. We will provide accommodation from Sep 17 until Sep 27 either in the guesthouse of the LMU or at other places such as appartments of other participants from Munich.

Global Scholarships

International students who are invited to Munich will automatically receive a travel scholarship. The Global Entrepreneurship Summer School will contribute 50% of your total travel costs (mostly flight tickets) up to a cap of € 500,-. Food & travel in Munich

We will provide you for free some exclusive dinners as well as many snacks and coffee during the whole week. In addition we will cover your travel expenses for the public transport in Munich throughout the whole week.

Tuition

Only if you are a student from Germany or we will charge atutuion fee of € 79,- for early bird applicants and € 119,- for regular applicants per selected participant. If you can provide accommodation to an international participant you won’t have to pay a tuition fee – no matter when you apply.
